I love the ambiance of this spa. It looks and feels very traditional and oriental with the red lanterns, carpets and lacquered Chinese sliding doors. It's like walking in to an ancient foreign land. Yet it is combined with modern comforts like soothing piped in background music, air conditioning that is not too hot or too cold and best of all I think their massage beds are excellent. It was so well cushioned, making it very comfortable to lie on, even when faced down for more than an hour. The session was started with some warm aromatic tea. Then we were led down the hallway to our private massage rooms. We actually had an adjoining room but there are single rooms available as well and even a special couples room with Jacuzzi. We had the Imperial Chopsticks Massage which is normally $270 for a 90 minute session. But with the Entertainer we pay for one but two people get to enjoy the services.
Huang Ah Ma The Oriental Spa Chamber's Imperial Chopsticks Massage uses chopsticks as a tool for a unique body massage experience. A bundle of bamboo chopsticks are used to execute the massage in three primary movements - tapping, kneading and pressing on acupoints.
It was my very first time having an Imperial Chopsticks Massage. I did not know what to expect. My masseur started by tapping my whole body with bundles of chopsticks. I thought to myself, OMG am I going to be beaten with chopsticks for the next 90 minutes?! (haha) But it only lasted about a minute, and when she was done, I could feel a tingly feeling all over. It was a very quick boost of blood circulation. My therapist informed me that the tapping motion helps regulate the "chi" flow in the body.My masseur was An Qi & Farizan had her massage by Meng Li. After the 90 minutes, I felt so relaxed and rejuvenated. My friend Farizan felt the same too. And she was so impressed with this massage that she wants to take her husband with her when she uses her Entertainer App.
I was never a fan of going to Spa, I always have this notion that it is overly expensive and too luxurious for my taste. But when I saw this online offer for a discounted rate for a 3 hour spa indulgence, I decided to grab the chance and experience how to be pampered by professionals.
The place is The Oriental Spa Chamber under Mary Chia Holdings Limited which is a well established lifestyle and wellness provider in Singapore. Our schedule was supposed to be 4pm but we arrived at 3:30, instead of waiting we requested if we can start earlier than our original schedule and after a short consultation, the reception lady informed us that they can accommodate our request. At this early, I started loving their service already. After checking out, the reception lady asked us to fill up some forms, since it is our first time in their establishment, she asked if we are keen on other services they offer, we told her that we will check again their website and will then decide. She said ok and never 'push' us to offer their other products, which I really appreciated. We ended the experience with a nice dessert they have prepared for us in the reception area.
Overall, I had a good impression of spa centre because of my experience from this establishment. I wouldn't mind bringing my other friends here because I am sure they will enjoy the experience the way I did.
Location: 4*/5 _ A short walking distance away from Chinatown MRT Station
Facilities: 3.5*/5 _ Although small area, the design is very relaxing, the interiors has a certain mood that make you feel relax even if the services has not started yet.
Service: 4*/5 _ Very accommodating and attentive staff, I appreciate that they are not pushy in selling out their other products at the end of the service.
Value for Money: 4*/5 _ We bought it from an online deal site so we got it at a very discounted price, I believed the money was well spent and we got the service beyond the amount we paid for.
I actually came across this place randomly once and was amused by its name. The chinese words "Huang Ah Ma" literally mean "Emperor Dad" (not sure if I translated correctly) back in the olden Dynasty times. I was tempted to visit the place; and my wish was somehow granted when I spotted it on Groupon coincidentally on another day.
Ok, it is not really THAT cheap - I got the one that was on promotion for 2 pax and we paid $42.50 each for 90 mins of session with them. It's usual prices for ala carte are WAY, WAY more expensive than the deal price!
(The session includes 60 minutes FULL body massage + 15 mins foot soak + 15 mins Sauna)
What appealed me was its ORIENTAL interior design of the place based on the photos that were advertised on its website. (Not to mention that I am a huge fan of oriental style).
So you can imagine my excitement when I managed to secure an appointment with them after I purchased the deal.
However, the booking of appointment wasn't really a smooth-sailing one as I was unreasonably told that they do not offer massage services AFTER April (I had wanted to book for a slot in June). I was appalled as it was supposed to be valid till AUGUST as stated on the Groupon website! The person who picked up my call did not provide me any reason despite me asking; and just simply insisted that they do not offer the services after April. When our 15 mins feet soak was up, we were led to hall of different compartments where we could finally lie down and relax for our 60 mins full body massage. I was SO hyped up at the thought that I couldn't wait to pounce on the massage bed so badly. Speaking about being desperate. HAHA.
We were given time to change and wrap ourselves with towels while awaiting our masseurs. (Don't worry, they are all female masseurs!)
Sorry- as much as we had wanted to take photos of us during the massage session, we couldn't as we did not have a photographer with us. (Not to mention that we were given lockers to lock our bags outside)
Both Shreky and I were lucky that we were in the same compartment (We actually bought the 2 pax meant for couples); hence we were able to communicate with each other more freely!
So... You might be wondering how well the body massage went, right?
To be fair, I have to say that it was OK-OK. The initial part started out being painful as the masseur seemed to have powerful hands (I did tell her that it was quite painful and she used lesser force. In fact, it is always important to let your masseur know the level of pain you are experiencing during the massage!) . Thankfully, it became slightly more comfortable soon-after and I almost did fall asleep.
I would give the massage services a 7/10.
It is definitely not the "VERY SHIOK" kind of massage; but its still okay for the experience. I mean, if you are not able to take the pain... Just voice it out and the masseur will definitely respect you. :)
The masseurs were friendly people, and despite the fact that we came in using Groupon vouchers, they still gave us good service (There are some places that will totally offer you a not-here-or-there service if they see that you purchase their services using vouchers).
Fortunately, the service at Oriental Spa Chamber was great.
We were being taken into a small room for our 15 min Sauna (In fact, it was my VERY first Sauna experience!) I didn't like it at the beginning, but slowly adapted to the heat and I was amazed by the amount of sweat that came out from all parts of my body - including my face!Honestly, I felt like I was a pig being roasted in a hot oven - but the "after-effect" was awesome.
I was absolutely delighted when I was given the opportunity to work with The Oriental Spa Chamber because I was in dire need of a massage. I've been so tensed up these days so the spa treatment came at the perfect time. Another reason why I was excited to work with The Oriental Spa Chamber was because they use/adapt Traditional Chinese practises for their massages and I've been pretty interested in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) recently. So I believe that with the combination of TCM, the treatments would do more wonders than just a relaxing oil massage. The Oriental Spa Chamber is tucked nicely in the heart of Chinatown, less than 5 minutes away from the MRT station. Extremely convenient. First thing I noticed about the Spa was its ambience, it's so oriental. I hardly come across any spas that look as tradition as this one and I like it. It was very peaceful which helped me relax as I got ready for my spa. I had the Royal Foot Massage first. I actually looked at the time and it was a full 60 minutes of massage, excluding the foot soak. I always feel short charged when I go for foot massage sometimes because they say 60 minutes but 15 minutes is spent with my foot just in the tub. I was in the VIP room meant for four with a hugeee TV. I felt so relaxed, I almost fell asleep. I love foot massages and I especially like it when the pressure is just right. The masseur made sure he didn't use too much strength nor too little and the overall experience was a really satisfying one. Then I was led to one of the massage rooms for my body massage yay! The room was pretty small and I wondered how the masseur is going to manoeuvre around the room.. but I needn't worry because throughout the massage, I didn't feel that the size of the caused any problems at all. I had a full body massage for half an hour which was so relaxing. And I must say, I was surprised by the strength the masseur had in her. Because my shoulders and back are so tense, I really needed someone with good strength and she didn't disappoint. It was a great treat for my tired soul. Then I had half an hour of Gua Sha (__) which means "scraping sha-bruises". It is a traditional Chinese medical treatment in which the skin is scraped to produce light bruising. Practitioners believe gua sha releases unhealthy elements from injured areas and stimulates blood flow and healing (via Wiki). It was really painful and I had to clench my teeth to prevent myself from squirming. But as soon as the treatment stopped, the pain stopped. I didn't feel any major discomfortable, except a little soreness, after the treatment. My bruises were purplish which meant my body was tired and stressed. The bruises looked hideous but they faded after a couple of days. I actually quite enjoy the treatment and I think it really is a good way to relieve the tension stored inside.
Thanks Jasmin and the lovely staff in The Oriental Spa Chamber for giving me this wonderful experience :)
