Hand pressed hair colouring is an interesting medium for colouring hair. It's been speculated to take over the craze about ombre, and for the novelty, we won't be surprised if it does.
First invented by hair colourist Chiala Marvici from Cutler Salon in New York, hand pressed hair colouring is done through painting colours on a long piece of glass, and then manually pressed on with a blunt scrapping tool. The end result is multidimensional. Best part, it takes half the time to achieve the seemingly effortless gradients of an ombre hair colour.
The versatility of this hand pressed hair colouring technique allows you to explore different patterns you imagine for your hair.
From diagonals, to batik, really anything you think of that you dare to! Hand pressed hair colouring is a new era of taking ownership of your hair colouring process.

The hand press hair colouring technique is known to create a soft blended effect as you can see. For customers who prefer more prominent patterns, diagonal patterns are chosen over circular patterns. The colours will then be pressed only once onto the hair. For more blended results, the colours can be pressed twice to blend the patterns together.
The diagonal patterns are stand out on this bright and daring piece.
Be prepared to have your hair lightened if you choose crazy colours. Nevertheless, in order to bring out the contrast between your hair and the hand pressed colours, a base colour will first be applied to your hair. At Picasso Hair Studio, non-bleaching hair colours will cost $299, and bleaching hair colours will be at $359.
In case you think that hand pressed hair colouring technique is only for statement colours, natural colours are also an option.

Hand Pressed Hair Colouring Process
What happens during a session will include you picking out the colours that you prefer. For this lady at Picasso Hair Studio, she chose red in compliance with her lucky colours for her zodiac sign in 2016 (red or violet for Rabbit). The final colours picked were copper and red highlights, patterns were going to be diagonal at the side, and circular patterns at the back.
Hand pressed hair colouring is a process you can participate in. You can be prepared to flex your painting prowess on the flexiglass before the colours are applied to your hair!
The hairstylist will then press the pattern onto your hair with a blunt putty knife. This will blend your painted patterns together and soak each strand of your hair with colour. This process will be repeated until your hair is sufficiently saturated with colour.
The angle and strength of the scrapping step has to be precise. Needless to say, the tool plays an important role too.
