Ever so often while watching Korean dramas, don’t you find yourself wishing that you have hair just like the actresses of the show? It’s amazing how Korean celebrities are able to maintain hair so fashionably yet looking so effortless. Following the K-pop wave, Korean trends – hair and beauty in particular - have taken the markets by storm.
Although seemingly effortless, looking like a k-pop star takes a whole lot more work and consistent grooming. Hairstylist needs to have crucial techniques and hair styling knowledge before he or she can give you that particular hairstyle spotted by 2NE1’s CL or Cheon Songyi from You Who Came From The Stars. Going all the way to Korea just to have our hair done is way too extravagant and probably too expensive to be done regularly, so the next best option? Head down to a Korean hair salon, right here in Singapore!
Is it authentically Korean?
Some Korean hair salons in Singapore have Korean staff flown over from Korea to ensure an authentic Korean styling experience. If they are not Korean, stylists would have been trained in Korea before bringing over their best practices back to Singapore!
What’s so special about Korean hair salons?
Previously, Wellnessly has published an article about soft and normal rebonding, Korean hair salons offer Volume rebonding on top of the two more common rebonding options.
Volume rebonding is a technique that is similar to soft rebonding, except that you can add an even more voluminous curl at the end of your hair. Volume rebonding is perfect if you want straighter hair, but is concerned over the common problems of hair looking limp or flat after a normal rebond. To put it in more simple light, you can imagine the rebonding spectrum with normal rebonding at the straightest end, then soft rebonding as mildly straight retaining some natural waves, then volume rebonding on the most natural looking straight hair on the opposite end!
Volume rebonding works by using special hair products and techniques to ensure your hair retains volume while adding more volume. For example, the special neutraliser is not applied to your hair normally like in normal or soft rebonding, but it is instead sprayed on to your hair, to create air bubbles. This process will create more volume for your hair, even as it is straightened!
If you give more attention to how Korean actresses dress in drama, you might have noticed they always manage to look feminine despite wearing clothes that are very androgynous or plain. A large part of this is attributed to the Korean perm.
So what is a Korean perm? In contrast to traditional perms, which can sometimes look stiff and unnatural like you’ve just stepped out of a 80's comedy movie. Korean perms give a softer, more natural and feminine look without being too obvious about it.
Korean perms however do require more maintenance as hair is not as harshly treatment to retain the “naturalness”. Perms will straighten out within a comparatively shorter period of time. Especially for those who wash their hair every day, Korean perms may only last for slightly more than two months. This option will be great for adventurous style chameleons who doesn’t like to stick to the same hairstyle for long periods!
Vibrant Hair Colours
Reddish tones used to dominate the scene earlier this year, but now it seems to be more about the pinkish brown tones that add a softer feminine touch.
You’ve surely seen pictures and videos of K-pop stars, around the web, with flamboyant hair colours that is ever changing, without a fixed hairstyle lasting for more than 1 performance or so. Like hairstyles, hair trends in Korean also change just as quickly. Korean hair salons, to stay competitive, have to also stay in touch with what are the latest trends. So, always ask the hairstylist for the latest hairdo or hair colour and expect to find something new!
As per regular salons, you can always discuss with your stylist which colour best suits your hair and face shape, so you don’t come out of the salon looking like you’re going for a themed party.
Korean hair salons take pride in providing a wholesome experience for you. So you will not only get a great haircut, but also a soothing and comfortable experience in the salon. You can definitely feel all your stress and worries dissipating while they meticulously massage and your scalp, allowing you to feel good both inside and out! It’s a perfect add-on to the whole Korean hair salon experience.

Walking into the salon and asking for a hairstyle based on a picture is the simplest manner to ask for a specific hairstyle, however the end result may not always be exactly like in the photos. Hairstyles are very dynamic. For example, the same cut may turn out differently on two different persons due to differing hair conditions. You should be informed that a certain hairstyle may be deliberately styled just for a photo-shoot or a performance and hence, will not last through the night. Dramatic hairstyles are usually not permanent and requires more maintenance than usual.
You never always know for sure whether a certain cut or a colour will really suit you until you try it. But you can definitely count on the hairstylists at a Korean hair salon to try their best to help you get what you want.
