Don’t you want that glowing and radiant skin that each beauty brand so promises with the use of their products? But each beauty purchase – that new miracle serum, or snail essence mask or new generation laser treatments etc. – only serve to break your bank one step at a time with seemingly unequal returns on your complexion.
Famed and gorgeous Hollywood actress Eva Mendes confessed in her interview with Violet Grey that, “When it comes to skin care I love using things I can find in my kitchen cabinet! I use coconut oil as a moisturizer and I combine yogurt and sea salt to exfoliate. If I’m going out and looking tired and puffy (which happens a lot these days), I dip my face into a bucket of ice water. I once worked with a makeup artist who worked briefly with Lucille Ball. She told me that’s what the actresses did back then. “
Saving on beauty treatments yet being able to look fabulous has sooo many countless perks! Having more to buy that new bag you’ve been eyeing, going out on dates looking fresh with a natural blush… DIY beauty treatments and tips can be surprisingly effective without the heavy burden on your financial status. Sometimes, it takes little more than cultivating small habits that can make a great change. Thank us later!
1. Boost the shine of your hair
Limp, flat and dull hair has plagued women for centuries. Endless range of sky-high priced keratin treatments to more wallet-friendly leave in hair serums are available in so many places so much so that we don’t know which one to buy exactly. Most of us think that the more expensive it is the better it will be. That is certainly not the case!
Protein and moisture are the 2 most important ingredient in a hair mask to restore shine in our hair. Any others are unnecessary. Crack 2 egg-white and mix in coconut oil to make your own hair mask, leave in and wash off after 15 minutes with warm water. Brace yourself for an added new shine to your locks!
2. Moisturise your neck.
When asked why Karl Lagerfeld loves Lily Allen, the new face of Chanel in 2009, he replied “her little upturned nose, and her perfect décolletage.” We never think of our neck until it’s too late. Moisturize and give your neck the attention it hasn’t been receiving starting today!
Moisturize as soon as you get out of the shower while our pores are still dilated allowing maximum absorption of the nutrients in the lotion that we painstakingly slather all over our body.
3. Moisturize away!
On the same note, moisturizing is the most basic and the first step to beautiful skin. Perspiration is common in our tropical weather. Sitting in an air-conditioned environment similarly strips moisture from our skin. Keeping your skin healthy and firm is part of the whole package in looking great.
Vaseline is a less costly option as a moisturizer especially for neglect parts such as your foot and elbows. Exfoliate your feet in the shower with a pumice, apply a layer of Vaseline, put on a pair of socks and head to bed. Wake up the next day with a pair of soft soles that you can flaunt in your cutesy sandals! (Goodbye, cracked heels!)

4. No make-up remover? Use lotion instead.
Waterproof mascaras these days are getting better at delivering the smudge-proof and one-day tattoo promise and we’re not complaining. However removing them can be such a hassle! Tough mascaras that leaves you looking like a drunken Goth kid or a panda as you try and remove it with a water-based remover are indeed a pain. The next time this happens, use a lotion instead. Might work better than some other make-up removers!
5. Don’t pop your zits and use tooth paste as a remedy.
We have heard it a million times over: do not pop your zits! Popping them increases the risk of scarring and spread the bacteria to pores around, which may cause the formation of more zits.
Keep your face clean and keep your hands off your face! Try and not touch your face throughout the day as our hands are constantly exposed to lots of bacteria. The unconscious touches to your face may cause inflammation to existing zits by introducing bacteria from the surroundings.
Wash your face with a cleanser and soothe your pores with a alcohol free toner then, apply a small amount of toothpaste just enough to cover the size of your zit and leave it overnight while you sleep. Wash off with warm water the morning after. Contents of toothpaste will dry out the zit and reduce redness and size. Try and use organic ones instead of gel toothpaste which doesn’t work very well.
6. Mineral make-up.
Go for mineral make up that contains skin-friendly natural extract like soya-bean or seaweed and Argan oil. Make-up made up of organic components and natural extracts are the best investments as opposed to harmful man-made ingredients that can cause unsightly and serious repercussions.
Also, read the small fonts and ingredient list of products that you are deciding to purchase. Be wary of products that does animal testing and contain artificial and toxic ingredients. Look out especially for ingredients that you are allergic or sensitive to.
7. Exfoliate your lips
Nothing ruins the perfect shade of lip gloss or lipstick like chapped and peeling lips. Application of lip balms are crucial especially for those with chapped lips but everyone needs to know this simple little beauty secret to looking fresh-faced: exfoliate your lips. Lightly brush your lips with your toothbrush while brushing your teeth every morning or before you sleep every night. Pucker up and fill those smooth and luscious lips with the season’s hottest colours!
By no means should you live without spending a single penny on beauty products or regimes. The occasional treats to spas, haircuts and manicure are essential to feeling fabulous too! Looking great starts with feeling great, if you can buy yourself a little self-assurance it is always money well spent.
Last but not least, Smile lots!! It is your most beautiful asset so flaunt it whenever and wherever, as often as you can. Besides, smiling is free and very infectious. So go on, smile away!! You never know who is falling in love with that smile of yours.
