I returned to Kenjo Salon for a much needed haircut after my first time there last November, which left a favourable first impression. Kenjo Salon comprise of a mixture of local and Korean stylists that gives a unique style to the salon. It is literally a cut above the rest, storming the hairstyling scene since the large Korean waves has swept through Singapore by its fashion coattails, which does not seem to be subsiding any time soon.
I was greeted by the cosy yet modern sight of the salon’s white gold accented interiors. It felt luxurious yet unpretentious. I was presented with a comprehensive drinks menu, instead of the typical lukewarm pallid tea served at most salons. This time, I had the privilege of having my hair attended to by Joseph Foo, the director stylist of the salon. Joseph is also the founder of Kenjo and has 16 years of experience in creating the most flattering and stylish cuts for his customers. It was an overall very memorable experience at the salon that will leave me (and many customers alike, I’m sure) coming back for more.
Since I had had such a wonderful experience before and now with the most senior and experienced hairstylist of the salon, I had rather high expectations this time. I was not disappointed. Joseph began by explaining my hair growth patterns and what the more suitable cuts and styles were for my hair. Prior to Kenjo Salon, I have never had my stylist explain anything beyond the cut itself, but it does make sense to understand the composition and structure of the hair before one attempts to alter it. I found the science behind hair rather intriguing, and Joseph was a patient teacher who answered all my questions in an amicable and knowledgeable manner. I was very pleased.
I fumbled through telling Joseph my preferences for my hair cut; short on the sides, longer on the top, very “specific” instructions. Experienced with handling inexperienced folks like myself, Joseph took my preferences into consideration and still delivered a stunning cut. Most importantly, it was a cut that can be easily maintained till my next session with Kenjo Salon on top of being highly stylish.
After the cut, I was led away to wash my hair and I got to try the ice wash which was extremely refreshing. It literally felt like washing your hair with ice-cold water and it energised my senses, especially since the weather in Singapore is always so warm and humid. The ice wash was accompanied by a great head massage, which I consider critical to a good salon experience. If the head massage that comes with the hair wash is not up to par, that would be one less incentive to return to the salon. Needless to say, Kenjo Salon offers a truly invigorating head massage that I thoroughly enjoyed.
The final step was to blow dry and style my hair, something that I consider a luxury since I do not have the time or the motivation to do that every day. Having somebody dry and style your hair for you definitely makes you feel indulged with quality hair treatment. Joseph then taught me how to style and manage my hair on a daily basis. He also gave me tips on how to care for my hair as well. One of the things he mentioned was that shampooing your hair once a day is adequate. I was quite surprised as I have been shampooing my hair every time I take a shower - that could possibly be the cause of my oily scalp. On top of that, he also thoughtfully gave me a bottle of hair wax to keep my hair in the stylish zone. He gave me Fudge Matte Hed, it is one of the better hair waxes I have tried, smells amazing and easy to wash out.
I walked out of the salon feeling thoroughly satisfied and I sure am looking forward to my next visit at Kenjo Salon.
