Everyone knows a mermaid’s hair is her crowning glory. Old sailors’ tales tell of the sirens sunning themselves lazily on the sea-kissed rocks, basking in the warm light and running their fingers through their hair. In Walt Disney’s take on “Peter Pan”, Wendy Darling is absolutely enchanted by the sight of the mermaids tending their locks in the magical Mermaid Lagoon. In “The Little Mermaid”, Ariel’s fascination with the dinglehopper gives away every mermaid’s not-so-secret obsession with her hair!
I was absolutely delighted, then, when two lovely companies – Wellnessly and D’sire Hair – swam to my side of the lagoon to offer to transform my hair into the mermaid hair of my dreams. And I didn't even need to trade in my voice!
A little background on the two companies, before I start: Wellnessly, the company that linked D’sire Hair and I, is an organization that aims to link people with trusted reviews to all things beauty related: haircare, spas, makeup … you name it! D’sire Hair, the salon who executed my mermaid hair transformation, is a small, thriving business in hairstyling conceptualized and helmed by Joey and Anson – two lovely, electric people who made my stay there very pleasant. Having had extensive experience in the hairstyling industry, this dynamic duo founded D’sire Hair in August 2013. Their motivation? “To deliver clients’ dream hair,” Joey declared, her eyes lighting up as I quizzed her about their business mantra. “Here at D’sire Hair, we understand that different people have different conceptions of their dream hair, the hair they most desire, but they might not know exactly how to go along achieving it. Here at D’sire Hair, we believe that if you choose the right product, you can achieve the hair of your dreams without damage.” Joey and Anson went on to emphasize their salon’s keen slant on choosing and using only the best products that offered the best nourishment and care for clients’ hair.
Inspired by their business ethic, and confident that I was in skilled hands, I swam into their salon, located at Far East Shopping Centre, for the hair transformation of my choice: mermaid locks in ombre shades of varying blue, green, and purple. Having been informed that the entire transformation would take a cool 6 hours, I was understandably worried. I had nothing to fear, though – the entire D’sire team was on hand to make me feel at home, and their amicable chatter made my entire visit extremely enjoyable. I even brought along my pet octopus, Lucky, to keep us company:
The first step was to coat my hair in bleaching powder. I should point out here that D’sire Hair favours using products from the Goldwell line – a special haircare line that offers especial nourishment and care for hair. The D’sire team chose the oil-based bleaching powder “Blonde Up” for my hair – decidedly more expensive, but best for my hair, as the oil would act as a protectant, and moisturize instead of dehydrate locks. Anson painstakingly backcombed each section of my hair before coating it in bleach and foil, to create more defined layers (spoiler: they turned out beautiful!). Following which, I began the first of my many waits that day – waiting for about an hour for the bleach to set in. Hey, good things take time!
It took a few tries for the bleach to permeate my hair (apparently my particular brand of mermaid hair is extremely stubborn), but the D’sire Hair team persisted and persevered with their expertise – and finally, we bleached my hair to the perfect shade for the next step: the real magic – the colouring!
I had selected the colours blue, purple, and green from the Goldwell colour tone range for my mermaid hair transformation. The Goldwell range also boasted colours like pink, red, and orange – but Anson and Joey recommended the three I chose for their lasting power. As a professional mermaid performer, it’s essential my hair is as low maintenance as possible because of the gigs and mermaid practice I do on a frequent basis.
Here came the tricky part. I have one thing I want to say: that the team at D’sire Hair Salon, helmed by Anson that day – are absolute wizards at what they do. It was incredible to watch Anson deftly sectioning my hair, plotting which layers should be coloured with which specific shade of which specific colour. It was a daunting challenge, but Anson accepted it with gusto, declaring confidently that he loved meeting challenges, and that they’d never ombre dyed hair as long as mine before – so this would be a fantastic first! After hours of masterly work, waiting, checking, and waiting, I was bundled to have my hair washed, dried, and styled. All the while, I wasn’t allowed to peek – what torture!
It was entirely worth it, though, when Anson styled the very last curl, and finally let me have a look at myself. I’ll let the pictures speak for themselves, both curled and straightened:
Isn’t it absolutely beautiful? I was thrilled to the tips of my fins with how it turned out – I kept twirling my hair around my fingers to check if it was real! If D’sire Hair Salon opened a branch under the sea … all I can say is the merfolk would be queueing up like sardines in a can! I was pleasantly surprised, too, by how soft my hair was (as opposed to being brittle as hair normally is after bleaching and colouring) – a happy byproduct, I was informed, of the D’sire Hair team having used some of the best, most rejuvenating products on my hair.
So thank you, D’sire Hair, for doing such a lovely job with my hair – and a big thank you to the Wellnessly team for this marvellous transformation opportunity. I’m also happy to announce that D’sire Hair will be sponsoring Syrena, Singapore’s First Mermaid’s hair needs for 6 months from now. This isn’t the last you’ve heard of this talented lot, so stay tuned, fishies!
